Ranken was part of the original lineup and remained with it until 1996. He later rejoined the group in 2001 and performed with it during their reunion years until 2014.

In a statement on Wednesday at Facebook bandmates paid tribute to their colleague: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ranken, drummer, founding member and heart of The Pogues. Andrew, we thank you for everything, your friendship, your wit, your generosity of spirit and of course your music. You will forever be our true friend and brother. Our thoughts and love are with your family at this sad and difficult time.”

The cause of death has not been released. However, Rankin missed the group’s final shows due to health issues, with Tom Cull of Fontaines DC replacing him

Ranken’s powerful and unmistakable playing previously helped define The Pogues’ sound during their rise in the 1980s and 1990s, contributing to some of the band’s most celebrated recordings and live performances.

The Pogues were born in 1982 in London. For less than two years, they were called Pogue Mahone. They released their debut album Red Roses for Me in 1984 as The Pogues.

In total, they have seven studio albums to their credit. The latter was released in 1996 under the name Pogue Mahone. Singer Shane MacGowan, the main persona of the group, died in November 2024 at the age of 65 after a battle with pneumonia.

The band went on tour in May of last year after more than ten years. The core lineup included singer Spider Stacy, guitarist and accordionist James Fearnley, and banjoist, guitarist and saxophonist Jem Finer. Other musicians were led as guests.
