Dane first shared his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 , and subsequently dedicated himself to raising awareness for the condition. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually, difficulty with essential functions like speaking, eating, and breathing .

Dane rose to prominence playing the charismatic Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy from 2006 to 2012, with a guest appearance in 2021 . He later captivated a new audience with his portrayal of Cal Jacobs, the complex and often unsettling father of Rue Bennett, in the HBO series Euphoria .
Family and Final Days
Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. According to a statement released by his representatives, he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones . The family has requested privacy during this tricky time.
