Animal Collective Duo Avey Tare and Geologist Announce New Instrumental Project, Croz Boyce
Animal Collective members Dave Portner (Avey Tare) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) have announced a new instrumental project, Croz Boyce. Their self-titled debut album is set for release on May 8 via Domino Records.
A Tribute to David Crosby
The duo’s new venture, Croz Boyce, is named in reference to the late David Crosby, who passed away in 2023, around the time Portner and Weitz began collaborating on the project [Pitchfork].
Remote Collaboration and Mixing
Croz Boyce was created remotely, with Portner and Weitz recording their individual parts from their respective home cities of Asheville, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. [Pitchfork]. The album was mixed by Josh Dibb, also known as Deakin, another member of Animal Collective [Pitchfork].
Musical Style and Instrumentation
The Croz Boyce album features a blend of electric and acoustic string instruments, synthesizers, and percussion [Domino Music]. It is entirely instrumental [Domino Music].
“Hanging Out With a Blueberry Pop” and Visuals
The lead single, “Hanging Out With a Blueberry Pop,” was released today with a music video directed by professional snorkeler and filmographer Joseph Ricketts [Pitchfork]. The video features footage of manatees [Stereogum].
Recent Projects
Animal Collective’s last studio album, Isn’t It Now?, was released in 2023. Portner released his latest solo album, 7s, in the same year, and Weitz released his debut solo album, Can I Secure a Pack of Camel Lights?, in January [Pitchfork].
