Uruguayan Animal Shelter Faces Closure Amidst Overflowing Shelters

A beloved animal welfare organization in Uruguay, Amigos de los Animales, is on the brink of closure due to overwhelming numbers of abandoned animals and a lack of resources. The organization is holding an emergency adoption event today, Sunday, March 15, 2026, in an effort to find homes for the animals in its care.

Adoption Event Details

The adoption day is taking place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the shelter’s headquarters, located at Verocay 727, passing Colón. Dogs and cats are available for adoption.

A Crisis Point for Animal Welfare

Laura de León, director of Amigos de los Animales, expressed the dire situation, stating the organization “is going to disappear because we can no longer endure it. We no longer have the body, the strength, the space or the money. It is impossible to continue helping.”

Overwhelmed by Abandonment

Currently, the shelter houses 32 cats awaiting adoption, a number higher than usual for this time of year. The organization is also grappling with a crisis in its foster network, with one transitional home caring for over 60 dogs. Recent incidents include the discovery of five puppies abandoned in a box near the airport and three more found in a box left outside the headquarters on Friday.

Calls for Government and Public Responsibility

De León is urging the National Institute of Animal Welfare (INBA) and local authorities to take greater responsibility for animal welfare. She emphasized that NGOs across the country are facing similar challenges, essentially performing a role that should be fulfilled by the state and responsible pet owners. She stated that if people were responsible pet owners, animal shelters would not need to exist.

Lack of Legislation and Enforcement

A significant issue contributing to the crisis is the absence of laws that hold individuals accountable for animal abandonment and a lack of enforcement of existing animal welfare regulations. This allows abandonment to continue unchecked, leading to increased suffering and deaths. The organization also highlighted the need for increased access to free spay and neuter services and public education on responsible pet ownership.

Recent Rescue Efforts

Despite the challenges, Amigos de los Animales continues its rescue efforts. In the past week, the organization traveled to Guichón to rescue four abandoned cats and encountered further cases of abandonment in Algorta, resulting in the rescue of 12 animals, three of which were subsequently adopted.

The situation underscores a growing crisis in animal welfare in Uruguay, demanding urgent attention from both government and the public.
