Arizona’s March Madness Quest: Can Tommy Lloyd Finally Break Through?

For the third year in a row, and fourth time in five seasons under head coach Tommy Lloyd, the Arizona Wildcats (34-2) have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. This marks the 22nd Sweet 16 appearance in program history, placing Arizona 10th all-time in Division I basketball.

However, the second weekend has historically been a stumbling block for the Wildcats. Despite reaching the Elite Eight 11 times – most recently in 2015 – Arizona hasn’t reached the national semifinals since 2001, and their lone NCAA championship came in 1997 under coach Lute Olson.

Despite a strong regular season and a Big 12 Tournament Championship, Arizona’s path to the Final Four has been elusive. The Wildcats were a No. 1 seed in 2022, Lloyd’s first season, but only reached the Sweet Sixteen. They have only made one Final Four appearance as a top seed, in 1988, with the other three trips coming as lower seeds, including the championship run in 1997.

Oddsmakers remain optimistic about Arizona’s chances. As of March 24, 2026, FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Wildcats at +330 to win the national title, second only to Michigan (+300), and ahead of Duke (+420). They are also favored at -145 to reach the Final Four.

Why Arizona Can Make a Deep Run

Several factors position Arizona for a potential championship run:

  • Defensive Prowess: Arizona boasts the third-ranked adjusted defensive efficiency in the nation (90.1 points allowed per 100 possessions, per KenPom.com), and their opponent field goal percentage of .390 is tied for second-best among Sweet 16 teams.
  • Rebounding Dominance: The Wildcats have consistently won the rebounding battle, particularly in the NCAA Tournament, with a +21 margin against Long Island and a +28 margin against Utah State, including 22 offensive rebounds against the Aggies.
  • Frontcourt Depth: Players like Motiejus Krivas and Koa Peat have recorded double-doubles, while Ivan Kharchenkov and Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year Tobe Awaka (who leads the nation in offensive rebounding percentage) provide significant contributions.
  • Foul Drawing: Arizona excels at drawing fouls, averaging just under 20 fouls per game, leading to numerous free throw opportunities. They average 19.4 made free throws per game while allowing only 17 foul shots per contest.
  • Efficient Offense: Arizona shoots 50% from the field, ranking 13th nationally and fourth among Sweet 16 teams.
  • Inside Scoring: The Wildcats prioritize scoring inside the arc, leading the nation with 1,600 2-point shot attempts and 880 made.
  • Improved Three-Point Shooting: Arizona has shown improved three-point shooting in the NCAA and Big 12 Tournaments, shooting 43.3% and 44.4% respectively.

Potential Roadblocks for the Wildcats

Despite their strengths, Arizona faces potential challenges:

  • Pressure Defense: Opponents’ pressure defense has caused issues for Arizona, leading to turnovers and disrupted offensive rhythm.
  • Injury Concerns: While currently healthy, Arizona has dealt with injuries to key players like Peat, Dwayne Aristode, and Jaden Bradley throughout the season.
  • Historical Unluckiness: Arizona has a history of unfavorable outcomes in the NCAA Tournament, with several instances of close calls and controversial calls going against them.

Key Player: Jaden Bradley

Jaden Bradley, the Big 12 Player of the Year, has a knack for delivering in crucial moments, hitting game-winning shots against UCLA and UConn, and contributing significantly in close games. Utah State coach Jerrod Calhoun believes Bradley is key to Arizona’s success, stating, “If they’re going to win a national championship or get to the Final Four, in my opinion, Bradley’s going to get them there.”

Arizona will open its Sweet 16 matchup against Arkansas in San Diego. Whether the Wildcats can overcome their historical hurdles and finally reach the Final Four remains to be seen, but their talent, coaching, and determination make them a serious contender for the national championship.
