Arizona Football Falls too Iowa State 39-14

The box score didn’t fully show how Arizona football lost 39-14 to No. 14 Iowa State on Saturday.

Looking at the team stats, the total yards were similar (400 to 360, Iowa State), the time of possession was close (31:05 to 28:55, Iowa State), adn Arizona actually had more first downs, 20 to 19.

Though, the game came down to field position and big plays, and Iowa State was better in both areas, especially at home after Arizona had a bye week.

Iowa State started three of their five touchdown drives on Arizona’s side of the field.

“This game showed us where we stand, and it was tough. It hurts,” coach Brent Brennan said after the game. “They beat us. They beat us fairly. Now, what are we going to do about it? That’s what I want to know.”

Thru three games, Arizona’s biggest test was against Kansas State in Week 3. They won that game with a strong defensive stand, and running back Ismail Mahdi helped with 221 all-purpose yards.

At Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, they saw what the best team in the Big 12 currently looks like.Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht completed 14 of 20 passes for 243 yards and averaged 12.2 yards per pass. He ran for three touchdowns, even though sacks counted against his rushing total, leaving him with -10 yards on nine carries.

Iowa State had four receivers with catches of at least 22 yards, with Chase Sowell leading the way with 146 yards on just four receptions.

Brennan was happy with how linebacker Riley Wilson and defensive back Dalton Johnson played. Wilson had Arizona’s two sacks on Becht, and Johnson led the team with 10 tackles (eight solo).
