Arozarena and Raleigh Resolve WBC Handshake Dispute, Focus on Mariners’ Season
A potential distraction for the Seattle Mariners has been averted as Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh have reportedly resolved their differences stemming from an incident during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Arozarena publicly apologized to Raleigh after Raleigh declined a handshake before an at-bat during a game between the United States and Mexico.
The Handshake Incident
The controversy began on March 9th when Arozarena attempted to shake Raleigh’s hand as he stepped up to the plate. Raleigh did not reciprocate the gesture, leading to a visible reaction from Arozarena. The moment quickly gained attention, particularly within Mexican media outlets. This wasn’t the first time Arozarena had experienced a similar snub during the 2026 WBC; Will Smith of the Los Angeles Dodgers also declined a handshake from Arozarena during the 2023 tournament.
Arozarena’s Initial Response
Following the game, Arozarena expressed his frustration, reportedly using strong language towards Raleigh, according to a Mexican journalist. He questioned Raleigh’s upbringing and made disparaging remarks via NBC Chicago.
Apologies and Moving Forward
However, Arozarena has since walked back those comments, issuing a public apology to Raleigh. “I understand that with Opening Day a few days away, I don’t want it to be a distraction. Cal and I have talked and I apologized for what I said after the game. Nothing in the WBC takes away from the fact that we are brothers and teammates. He’s family, and we are both focused on helping the Mariners win the World Series,” according to Bolavip.
Raleigh Downplays Conflict
Cal Raleigh has also indicated there is no lingering animosity between the two players. He stated there was “no beef” with Arozarena, as reported by the Associated Press, and both players appear ready to focus on the upcoming MLB season.
Mariners’ Outlook for 2026
Both Arozarena and Raleigh are key players for the Seattle Mariners in 2026. Arozarena posted a .238 batting average with 146 hits and 27 home runs last season, although Raleigh led the team with 60 home runs. The Mariners are currently favored to win the AL West and are tied for the third-best odds to win the World Series.
