Myles Garrett Wants Browns to Show a Path to Winning Before Re-signing

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has been a cornerstone of the team for nine seasons. While he desires to remain in Cleveland, there’s a crucial condition: he needs to see a clear plan for winning.

“I’m not trying to rebuild,” Garrett told reporters on Friday, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com. “I’m not trying to rebuild,” Garrett emphasized. “I’m trying to win right now. And I want that to be apparent when the season is over and we have those discussions. I want them to be able to illuminate, illustrate that for me so that can be something I can see in the near future.”

The Watson Contract Presents a Challenge

Building a winning team is a complex task, especially with the Cleveland Browns’ current contract situation. They have a significant financial commitment to quarterback Deshaun Watson. His contract, widely considered one of the biggest blunders in NFL history, carries a hefty $92 million cash outlay and impacts the team’s salary cap significantly.

Beyond the initial compensation made to acquire Watson, his $230 million, fully-guaranteed deal makes it challenging for the Browns to allocate resources to bolster other areas of their roster.

The Clock is Ticking for Garrett

Garrett, like Watson, is signed with the Browns for two more seasons. With age being a factor—he celebrates his 29th birthday in a few days—the window for immediate success feels increasingly narrow. If Garrett doesn’t believe the Browns have a viable path to winning soon, he might consider seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Now, the responsibility falls on Cleveland’s front office to demonstrate a concrete plan for achieving championship contention. Can they convince Garrett that a brighter future awaits him in Northeast Ohio, even with the Watson contract as an obstacle?
