2026 Asian Games: Athletes to Stay in Cruise Ship and Container Units

Athletes participating in the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, will experience unconventional accommodations – a cruise ship and repurposed shipping containers. Organizers have opted for these temporary solutions to manage costs, despite some initial concerns.

Unique Accommodation Plans

Approximately half of the expected 15,000 athletes and officials will reside in the cruise ship and container units during the Games. The remaining participants will be housed in traditional hotels, including some in Tokyo, which will host the swimming, diving, and equestrian events.

Cost-Effective Measures

Kazuhiro Yagi, vice-secretary general of the Aichi-Nagoya Games organizing committee, explained that utilizing the cruise ship and container units is a more economical alternative to constructing a dedicated athletes’ village. Games Details

Nagoya will be the third city in Japan to host the Asian Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994. The 2026 Games will feature 46 nations and 461 events across 43 sports and 62 disciplines.
