Ubisoft Continues to Embrace the “AAAA” Label Despite Industry Skepticism

Ubisoft has a history of generating both amusement and criticism within the gaming community, and a recent trend highlights the latter. The company continues to utilize the term “AAAA” – a designation it did not originate – to describe its aspiring game projects, despite the label now being largely associated with lengthy development cycles and, in some cases, commercial disappointment.

The “AAAA” designation was notably applied to titles like Beyond Good and Evil 2, which at one point held the record for the longest development period for a major video game, and skull and Bones. The latter’s launch has been met with lukewarm reception, currently registering a mere 18 concurrent players on Steam.

Consequently, “AAAA” has evolved from a supposed indicator of high production value to a source of industry jokes and memes. However, Ubisoft appears to be undeterred, persisting in its use of the term even as it carries a negative connotation. This continued branding strategy raises questions about the company’s perception of its own projects and its relationship with the gaming community.
