Managing Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Infections: A Guide for Authorized Nursing Staff
The landscape of sexually transmitted infection (STI) management is continually evolving. While a complete update to the official training program for treating Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections is underway, this interim resource provides essential guidance for authorized nursing personnel. This training module is designed to bridge the gap until the fully revised program is launched.
Core Learning Objectives
This training aims to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage uncomplicated Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections in asymptomatic individuals.Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Navigate and apply the current National Medical Protocol for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae treatment in asymptomatic cases.
Utilize the Optimal Use Guide for uncomplicated Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections to ensure appropriate and evidence-based care.
Accurately identify recommended treatment strategies and partner management protocols for asymptomatic patients, operating within the scope of nursing practice as defined by relevant regulations.
Who Should Participate?
This training is specifically designed for registered nurses who hold prescribing authority, as outlined in the Regulation on certain professional activities which can be exercised by a nurse. It is crucial that participants meet the prerequisites outlined below to ensure competency and adherence to legal standards.
Prerequisites:
Prior to commencing this training, nurses must:
Have completed training on STI screening practices – equivalent to “ITSS screening: act with competence, adapt the interventions” – or a recognized equivalent.
Possess a valid prescriber number, obtained in accordance with the requirements of the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ).
training Structure and Time Commitment
This temporary training module is structured into four distinct sections, totaling approximately 90 minutes.
- National Medical Protocol Review (30 minutes): A detailed examination of the current national guidelines for treating Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections.
- Optimal Use Guide Overview (30 minutes): Focuses on practical application of the Optimal Use Guide, emphasizing best practices for uncomplicated infections. Consider that,according to the CDC,in 2022,over 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in the United States, highlighting the ongoing need for effective treatment strategies [1].
- Case Study Application (20 minutes): Interactive session applying learned concepts to realistic patient scenarios.
- Evaluation & Feedback (10 minutes): Assessment of learning and opportunity to provide feedback on the training module.
