Auntie Pasto’s Celebrates 35 Years as Houston’s Bellaire Staple For 35 years, Auntie Pasto’s has served as a beloved Italian restaurant in Houston’s Bellaire neighborhood, offering a consistent menu of pastas, pizzas, and comfort dishes that have made it a local institution. The milestone was recently highlighted in community celebrations and social media posts from the restaurant itself. Founded in 1991, Auntie Pasto’s has maintained its presence at 5419 Bellaire Blvd., becoming known for its red-checkered tablecloths and menu items that have remained largely unchanged over the decades. Owner Bob Sutton, the restaurant’s third proprietor, attributes its longevity to consistency, noting that “the worst thing about Auntie Pasto’s is nothing ever changes” while also calling that very consistency its greatest strength. The restaurant’s origins trace back to Hawaii, where the concept was first developed before being brought to Houston by previous owner Tom Dietrich. Dietrich, after visiting a friend who operated an Italian restaurant in Honolulu, sought to recreate a “Little Italy dining” experience in Houston’s diverse culinary landscape. This Hawaiian influence is still acknowledged today with a small “Aloha” sign above the bar. While the core menu has remained consistent, Auntie Pasto’s has incorporated regional Gulf Coast influences over time, such as crawfish, reflecting local tastes while maintaining its Italian foundation. The restaurant briefly expanded to a Pearland location, which has since closed. Auntie Pasto’s is particularly noted for its dessert offerings, including “To Die For,” a layered pastry featuring ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, almond torte, and seasonal berries. The restaurant describes itself as comfortable enough for families yet appealing to food enthusiasts, serving dishes like cilantro fettuccini with jalapenos and crawfish, and black pepper fettuccini with shrimp. As of its 35th anniversary, Auntie Pasto’s continues to operate at its Bellaire location, serving the community with what Sutton describes as “great food and familiar faces.” The restaurant marked the occasion with a Facebook post thanking patrons for their support over the years.
