Ayrton Senna’s 1984 Toleman TG183B Set to Fetch Up to €3.8 Million at Auction

The Formula 1 car that marked Ayrton Senna’s debut in the sport, the 1984 Toleman TG183B, is heading to auction with an estimated value of between €2.8 million and €3.8 million. The car holds a significant place in motorsport history as the vehicle in which Senna began to build his legendary career.

Senna drove the TG183B in four rounds of the 1984 season, starting with his debut at the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix. It was in this car that he secured his first championship points, achieving sixth-place finishes at both the South African and Belgian Grands Prix. Motorsport.com reports the auction is being handled by RM Sotheby’s.

A Piece of Formula 1 History

Designed by Rory Byrne, the 1984 Toleman TG183B being offered for sale has been remarkably well-preserved, retaining many of its original features. It is powered by a period-correct Hart 415T engine and a rebuilt gearbox. Senna-Toleman.com highlights the car’s importance as the vehicle that launched Senna’s F1 career.

Recent Demonstrations

The chassis has seen recent use, being driven by former F1 driver and Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle during the 2022 documentary, The Story of Toleman. More recently, Alpine driver Pierre Gasly had the opportunity to drive the car at Silverstone in 2024, marking the 40th anniversary of Senna’s F1 debut and 30 years since his tragic death.

Gasly described the experience as “incredible” and “emotional,” noting the purity of driving a car with just three pedals and a simple steering wheel, a stark contrast to modern F1 cars. RM Sotheby’s Facebook page shared footage of Gasly’s experience.

Senna’s Early Career

After testing with Brabham, McLaren and Williams, Senna joined Toleman, marking a pivotal moment in his career. He transitioned from Formula 3 to the elite world of Formula 1, quickly establishing himself as a rising star. Senna ultimately achieved nine overall in the 1984 season with Toleman.
