Princess Kate’s BAFTAs Return Marks a ‘Business as Usual’ Moment for the Royal Family
The Princess of Wales made a highly anticipated return to the BAFTAs red carpet on February 23, 2026, alongside Prince William, marking her first appearance at the awards ceremony in three years. The appearance comes as the royal family navigates a challenging period following the arrest of Prince William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
A Return After Recovery
Kate Middleton has been absent from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards – often considered the British equivalent of the Oscars – for three years due to her cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment and recovery. She last attended the ceremony in 2023.
Fashionably Regal: A Recycled Gucci Gown
For the 79th British Academy Film Awards, Kate opted for a blush pink and white Gucci gown, a choice that showcased her commitment to sustainable fashion. The Princess first wore the gown in 2019 at a gala dinner at the V&A Museum. She paired the dress with a matching belt in the same material and color as Prince William’s maroon velvet tuxedo jacket.
A Show of Strength Amidst Family Drama
Prince William and Kate’s attendance at the BAFTAs is seen as a deliberate demonstration of normalcy following the recent arrest of William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The couple arrived at the Royal Festival Hall shortly before 4:30 pm, greeting onlookers with smiles. This public appearance followed similar displays of resilience from other royal family members, including King Charles III at London Fashion Week and Princess Anne at a men’s prison in Leeds.
Star-Studded Attendance
The BAFTAs drew a constellation of stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, and Timothée Chalamet. Other attendees included Kate Hudson and Chloe Zhao.
Czech Representation
The Czech Republic also had a moment to shine at the awards, with the documentary film Mr. Nobody against Putin winning the award for best documentary film. Producer Alžběta Karásková accepted the award wearing a gown from Czech designer Lucie Kutálková’s Leeda brand.
