Barry Manilow Announces Latest Album ‘What a Time’ and Extensive Tour
Barry Manilow is set to release his 33rd studio album, What a Time, on June 5 – his first album of mostly new material in nearly 15 years. The announcement comes amid a period of both health challenges and professional recognition for the veteran entertainer.
New Album Details
Primarily produced by Manilow and longtime collaborator Michael Lloyd, What a Time is Manilow’s first mostly original LP since 2011’s 15 Minutes, which reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. Manilow first entered the Top 10 on the Billboard album chart in February 1975 with Barry Manilow II.
The album features 13 tracks, with Manilow writing or co-writing all but two. Collaborators include John Bettis, Gary Barlow (of Take That), Bruce Sussman, and Enoch Anderson. Guest artists include saxophonist Dave Koz on “Glance at Me Now” and vocalist Sharon “Muffy” Hendrix on “When Somebody Says Goodbye.”
The first single, “Sun Shine,” echoes Manilow’s 1977 hit “Daybreak,” featuring a whistling break and a vinyl record sound effect. The song was co-written with Gary Barlow and produced by Manilow, David Benson, and Greg Bartheld. The music video, directed by Laís Sambugaro, does not feature Manilow, instead focusing on a young couple.
The album opens with “Once Before I Proceed,” co-written by Oscar winners Dean Pitchford and the late Peter Allen, and executive-produced by Clive Davis. The song reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.
