Bboxx Nigeria Empowers Women in Renewable Energy Sector Through Novel Training Program
In a move aligned with the International Women’s Day theme of “Provide to Gain,” Bboxx Nigeria has partnered with ImpactHER to provide a multi-track training program for female entrepreneurs. The initiative, launched during Women’s Month, aims to equip women with the skills and knowledge needed to participate in Nigeria’s growing renewable energy sector.
Addressing Nigeria’s Energy Access Gap
Nigeria faces a significant energy access gap, with approximately 90 million citizens lacking reliable electricity [PunchNG]. Bboxx Nigeria, which began operations in October 2021 [Bboxx], is working to address this challenge by connecting customers with clean, affordable, and reliable energy solutions.
The Training Program: A Three-Pronged Approach
The training program is structured around three core areas:
- Financial Mindset for Business Growth: Developing a strong understanding of financial principles for entrepreneurial success.
- Introduction to the Solar Business: Learning the fundamentals of establishing and running a solar enterprise.
- Hands-on Solar Installation Training: Acquiring practical skills in installing and maintaining solar systems.
These tracks are designed to enable participants to enter the clean energy value chain as entrepreneurs, agents, and skilled technicians.
Why Focus on Women?
Ene Adesanya, Managing Director of Bboxx Nigeria, emphasized the importance of women in driving economic growth and community development. “Women are extremely important to the health and growth of any society,” she stated. “Across our markets, we have consistently seen that women are among the most reliable agents and entrepreneurs. Empowering them with the right knowledge and skills ultimately strengthens families, businesses, and entire communities.” [Nouvelles du Monde]
Bboxx’s operational data supports this assertion, highlighting women as particularly effective agents, reinforcing the strategic value of gender-focused investment.
Bboxx Nigeria’s Expansion and Funding
Bboxx Nigeria is leveraging a $300 million fund backed by the World Bank to expand access to solar power across the nation [PunchNG], [Crest Africa]. This follows a successful $75 million Rural Electrification Agency program in 2022 [PunchNG]. The company aims to provide clean energy to 20 million people over 10 years, avoiding more than four million CO2 emissions [Bboxx].
Looking Ahead
This collaboration between Bboxx and ImpactHER underscores a commitment to inclusive participation in the renewable energy transition and highlights the crucial role women play in achieving sustainable development goals in Nigeria and across Africa. By investing in women’s empowerment, both organizations are contributing to a more resilient and equitable energy future.
