Chicago Bears Trade For Jeffery Simmons

The Chicago Bears traded for Tennessee Titans star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, sending two first-round draft picks and a 2027 fourth-round pick in exchange for Simmons and a 2028 fifth-round pick, ESPN reported. The blockbuster transaction follows extensive league-wide interest in the four-time Pro Bowler over recent seasons.

Tennessee Titans Field Inquiries And Shape The Proposal

According to ESPN, close to the entire league inquired about trading for Simmons in recent seasons, but the Titans rebuffed all offers until dealing with Chicago. The framework for the trade mirrored the Cleveland Browns’ deal for Myles Garrett, which involved a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, a 2029 third-round pick, and pass rusher Jared Verse. Tennessee treated Verse as the equivalent of a first-round selection during negotiations.

Joint Practice Inquiries And General Manager Talks

The trade’s roots trace back to joint practices between Chicago and Tennessee last summer, when the Bears first inquired about Simmons, sources told ESPN. The discussions intensified last Tuesday night when Bears general manager Ryan Poles called Titans GM Mike Borgonzi, with whom Poles previously worked in Kansas City. Both front offices ultimately agreed on the package sending Simmons to Chicago.

Roster Acceleration And Past Blockbuster Precedents

As the Titans evaluated the trade offer, team leadership decided they needed to accelerate roster growth through high-end draft capital. ESPN reported that Tennessee studied several major historical deals before pulling the trigger, including Detroit trading Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles, Seattle sending Russell Wilson to Denver, and the Browns dealing the No. 2 pick in the 2025 draft to Jacksonville.

Super Bowl Trends And Defensive Tackle Value

Chicago general manager Ryan Poles based his aggressive pursuit on historical trends among recent NFL champions. The Bears reviewed every Super Bowl winner since 2018 and found that each squad featured an elite defensive tackle. The Eagles had Fletcher Cox, the Rams Aaron Donald, the Chiefs Chris Jones, the Buccaneers Vita Vea, the Eagles Jalen Carter, and the Seahawks Leonard Williams. Believing Simmons could provide that caliber of impact, the Bears pushed their draft capital forward despite the mounting pressure on the front office to hit on remaining selections.
