Behemoth Cancels India Concert Amidst Threats from Religious Groups
Polish extreme metal band Behemoth has cancelled its upcoming performance in Bangalore, India, scheduled for March 3, following what the band describes as “numerous credible threats” stemming from religious Christian groups. The cancellation marks the latest instance of artistic expression facing opposition from religious factions, echoing similar issues the band has encountered in Turkey.
Rising Concerns Over Safety and Censorship
According to a statement released on social media, the threats involved pressure on both local authorities and the concert promoter to halt the show. Behemoth expressed concerns about the potential for arrest and physical danger, leading to the difficult decision to cancel the performance. The band emphasized that the promoter acted in solid faith throughout the process, but sufficient security assurances could not be obtained.
A Pattern of Religious Opposition
This incident is not isolated. Behemoth recently faced similar challenges in Turkey, where performances were cancelled due to accusations of “satanic propaganda” and deemed unacceptable by religious groups. The band views these events as part of a growing trend of religious fanaticism attempting to suppress artistic expression globally.
Freedom of Expression Under Fire
Behemoth’s statement underscored the importance of freedom of expression, stating, “In this modern age, artists should not face intimidation, threats, or the risk of imprisonment for performing their art.” The band advocates for the fundamental principle of creative freedom, regardless of religion, race, or culture.
Nergal’s History with Blasphemy Laws
Behemoth frontman Nergal has a history of legal battles related to artistic expression. In his native Poland, he was acquitted of “offending religious feelings” last year, but has previously faced fines and trials for actions perceived as blasphemous, including stomping on an image of the Virgin Mary and tearing a bible on stage. He was too reportedly asked to leave a YMCA gym in the US for not worshipping Jesus Christ.
‘The Shit Ov God’ and Provocative Artistry
Behemoth released their 13th studio album, ‘The Shit Ov God,’ in 2025 via Nuclear Blast Records. Nergal deliberately chose the provocative title to challenge conventions and spark debate, stating it was a “defiant plunge into the depths, daring to seek the absolute even in the gutter.”
Disappointment for Indian Fans
The band expressed deep disappointment to their fans in India, stating, “To our legions in India, we are deeply disappointed that we will not be able to perform for you on this occasion. We appreciate your support and hope to return soon. Stay strong. Stay free.”
