Bridging Cultures: Bicolano Students Discover Japan

A vibrant tapestry of cultural exchange was woven last week as a group of enthusiastic Bicolano students embarked on a captivating journey into the heart of Japan. Thanks to the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, partnered with organizations like Sorsogon State University, Bicol University, Cabangan High School, and major shopping destinations SM City Legazpi and SM Supermalls, the Japan Details and Culture Center (JICC) brought its “Hello! Japan” program to the Bicol region.

This immersive program aimed to showcase the rich and diverse facets of Japanese culture, revealing the deep connections shared between Filipino and Japanese societies. Yurie Mukaigawa, JICC’s cultural officer, emphasized the significance of nurturing these bonds, stating: “Japanese and Filipino cultures, as distinct as they are, share many commonalities. These connections must be nurtured and showcased to the next generation of Filipinos—they are the future of our two nations and of this part of the world.”

The ‘Hello! Japan’ experience offered students a whirlwind of cultural immersion. They delved into basic Japanese phrases, donned traditional attire like kimonos, happi coats, and yukata, and engaged in lively discussions about Japan’s unique traditions, distinct seasons, technological advancements, captivating pop culture, delicious cuisine, and dynamic sports scene.

Adding to the excitement, a captivating performance by Japanese singer FuMi enchanted the students. The students reciprocated with a lively performance of Pantomina, a traditional Bicol dance, creating a beautiful exchange of artistry and expression between the two cultures.

Further enriching the experience, information was presented on Japanese government scholarship programs, providing aspiring young minds with valuable pathways for academic pursuits in Japan. Interested students received data and guidance on application processes, opening doors to enriching educational experiences.
