Big 12 Commissioner Calls for Targeting Consistency After Controversial No-Call in Peach Bowl
DALLAS – Controversy continues to swirl around the Big 12 following a no-call on Texas safety Michael Taaffe’s high hit on Arizona State receiver Melquan Stovall late in their College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup at the Peach Bowl. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark spoke out, calling for greater consistency in determining targeting penalties to prevent such situations from arising again.
The Game-Changing Hit
With 1:15 left in regulation and the game tied, Taaffe delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit to Stovall as he caught a pass near midfield. Despite the evident impact, no flag was initially thrown. Referee Larry Smith of the Big Ten, however, stopped play to review the play for possible targeting. After a lengthy review, Smith announced there would be no penalty.
A Missed Opportunity for ASU
The lack of a targeting call proved crucial. Had a 15-yard penalty been assessed, Arizona State would have been positioned for a potential game-winning field goal attempt. Instead, the Sun Devils were forced to punt, and Texas ultimately secured victory in double overtime.
Yormark Calls for CFP Officiating Overhaul
In a statement Thursday, Yormark praised Arizona State’s performance, acknowledging their talent and representation of the Big 12. However, he didn’t shy away from addressing the controversial no-call. Yormark, who serves on the College Football Playoff management committee, revealed his ongoing discussions with CFP executive director Richard Clark regarding clarity surrounding targeting calls.
“Moving forward, we need to address CFP officiating to ensure national standards are developed,” Yormark said. “These standards will be crucial to the CFP’s future, and I look forward to discussing them with my fellow committee members when we meet next.”
The call has sparked a wider debate about the inconsistent application of targeting rules across college football, particularly in high-stakes games like the CFP.
