‘Bigfoot!’ Musical Comedy Receives Mixed Reviews Off-Broadway

New York City Center is currently hosting “Bigfoot!,” a new musical comedy created by Amber Ruffin, David A. Schmoll, and Kevin Sciretta, with direction and choreography by Danny Mefford. The production, which began performances on February 11, 2026, has garnered a range of responses from critics.

Synopsis and Creative Team

“Bigfoot!” is set in the fictional town of Muddirt, described as a “glow-in-the-dark oasis” located near a chemical dump site and nuclear power plant. The story centers on a misunderstood, eight-foot-tall youth and explores themes of corrupt politics, compact-town paranoia, and acceptance.

The cast features Grey Henson in the title role, alongside Jade Jones, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Katerina McCrimmon, Alex Moffat, and Jason Tam. Jake Letts, Mike Millan, and Kala Ross serve as understudies.

Critical Reception

Reviews for “Bigfoot!” have been mixed, with critics praising the show’s energy and humor while also noting structural and lyrical weaknesses.

Caroline Cao of New York Theatre Guide described the townsfolk as “cartoonishly” rendered and the book as containing “mile-a-minute jokes” alongside commentary on environmental justice and corruption, but noted that the show’s humor sometimes felt “overstuffed” and lacked structure. Hayley Levitt of TheaterMania highlighted Amber Ruffin’s influence on the show’s punchlines but criticized the overall “flimsiness” of the writing and Danny Mefford’s direction, pointing to “sloppy lyrics” and a score that doesn’t fully utilize its musical potential. Manhattan Theatre Club

Michael Sommers of New York Stage Review found the satirical humor to be “collegiate level” and the messaging regarding political susceptibility to be repetitive. New York City Center

Matthew Wexler of 1 Minute Critic praised the orchestrations and arrangements by David Schmoll and the cast’s energetic performance, noting Tim Mackabee’s scenic design as a charming backdrop. New York City Center

Thom Geier of Culture Sauce drew comparisons to other musicals with similar themes, such as “Bat Boy” and “Toxic Avenger,” but suggested that the story in “Bigfoot!” felt secondary to the comedic elements. New York City Center

Jonathan Mandell of New York Theater expressed surprise that the creative team, including the Tony-nominated Amber Ruffin, spent a dozen years developing the musical, and suggested that the material didn’t fully showcase the talents of the impressive cast. New York City Center
