Belichick Defends Patriots’ Defense After Mayo Calls Team ‘Soft’
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick fired back at Jerod Mayo’s assessment of the team’s performance following a disappointing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mayo, the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, labelled the team “soft” after their sixth straight defeat.
Belichick Stands By His Players
However, Belichick took exception to Mayo’s critique during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. “Defensively, the Patriots led the league last year in rushing defense, yards per carry, No. 1 in the league,” Belichick stated. “This year, they’re way down in the 20s somewhere. It’s the same guys… You got (Deatrich) Wise, you got (Davon) Godchaux, you got Keion White, you got (Marte) Mapu, you got (Christian) Gonzalez, it’s a lot of the same players and in some cases I would say more. I’m kind of hurt for those guys because to call them soft, they’re not soft.
“They were the best team in the league last year against the run. Those guys went out there and did it even though we couldn’t score many points offensively. So I feel bad for the defensive players because those guys, that’s a tough group,” Belichick added, visibly emotional about the subject.
The Patriots’ Struggles

Belichick’s comments highlight the stark contrast in perspective between the two coaches. The Patriots’ defense, which was lights-out last season, has struggled mightily this year, particularly against the run. Despite still featuring key players from last year’s dominant unit, the team has allowed significant yardage on the ground in recent weeks.
Looking Forward
While Belichick provided his players with a vocal show of support, the Patriots face a crucial challenge in their upcoming game against the New York Jets. A victory would be a much-needed boost for a team seeking to end its losing streak and reestablish its identity.
