BioMarin Invests €60 Million in Irish Manufacturing Expansion
In a major boost to Ireland’s life sciences sector, American biotechnology company BioMarin Pharmaceutical has announced a €60 million expansion of its Cork manufacturing facility. This investment marks the second significant expansion at the Shanbally site in just a few years, solidifying Ireland as a key location for BioMarin’s global operations.
Boosting Production Capacity and Innovation
The new expansion will involve the construction of a four-story laboratory facility, allowing BioMarin to increase production capacity for its existing portfolio of approved medicines. It will also create space for future growth and development of new therapies targeting rare genetic conditions.
This commitment to growth builds on the substantial investment BioMarin made last year, when it opened a state-of-the-art aseptic production facility at the Shanbally site. This facility, which took four years to complete, significantly enhanced the company’s ability to produce both clinical and commercial products.
“The Shanbally facility plays a crucial role in our global network, and this expansion emphasizes our confidence in Ireland’s skilled workforce and the strategic importance of this site to BioMarin’s long-term success,”
said Evelyn Marchany Garcia, Senior Vice President at BioMarin Pharmaceutical.
A Leader in Rare Disease Therapies
BioMarin has been active in Ireland for 13 years, developing and commercializing innovative therapies for patients with rare genetic disorders. The company boasts a portfolio of eight transformational commercial therapies and continues to invest in research and development to bring new treatments to patients worldwide.
Strengthening Cork’s Position in Life Sciences
Welcoming the announcement, Aaron Mansworth, President of the Cork Business Association, highlighted the positive impact this investment will have on the region. “While BioMarin’s facility is located in the county, its impact will be felt across the entire region, driving economic growth, creating high-value jobs, and enhancing Cork’s reputation as a leader in the life sciences sector.”
Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, also praised the investment, stating that it “is a welcome endorsement of the country’s position globally as a location of choice for biopharmaceuticals and as a trailblazer in advancing healthcare solutions.”
The Future of BioMarin in Ireland
BioMarin’s ongoing investment in its Cork facility is a testament to the company’s commitment to Ireland and its vibrant life sciences ecosystem. The expansion will further solidify Ireland’s position as a global leader in the development and manufacturing of innovative therapies for patients with rare diseases.
