Wilton Poultry Farm Hit by Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Bird Flu
Workers in specialized hazmat suits and face masks have been working tirelessly for almost three days at a poultry farm in Wilton, California. The reason? An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, also known as bird flu.
This news was brought to light by KCRA 3, who reported that the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) confirmed the outbreak. In an email, CDFA stated that workers from both the CDFA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have been on-site since yesterday, working to contain the spread of the virus.
“Footage shot by KCRA 3 shows signs saying that due to biosensitivity workers should walk through a clean water bath on the way in,” the report added.
The unfortunate reality of bird flu outbreaks is the need to swiftly euthanize affected birds. CDFA explained this practice is carried out with utmost speed to minimize the suffering of the birds and prevent further transmission of the virus locally, regionally, and nationally.
This incident marks the fourth bird flu case in the Sacramento County area this year, raising concerns within the community. Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye has been actively monitoring the situation. She emphasized this week that, thankfully, there have been no confirmed human cases of bird flu in the county to date.
However, Dr. Kasirye acknowledged the broader concern, stating, “We do know that it is a concern because in California we have seen cow herds that have been infected. We have seen a lot of bird flocks that have been infected as well.”
KCRA 3 is dedicated to getting further details and providing ongoing updates on this developing story.
