The Cambodian Ministry of Health revealed that the first human case of H5N1 avian influenza virus was recorded this year, in a 30-year-old man in Kampot Province, southwest of the country, according to what local media reported.

Symptoms of infection with the H5N1 bird flu virus

The Ministry explained that the patient suffered from symptoms of fever, cough, abdominal pain, and runny nose, which are common symptoms of the bird influenza virus in humans. Thanks to intensive medical care, the man recovered and returned to his home on February 14.

Source of infection and spread of the H5N1 avian influenza virus

Health investigations revealed that the dead chicken in the patient’s home was cooked three days before symptoms appeared, which prompted the authorities to examine contacts and suspects to limit the spread of the virus in society. The H5N1 influenza virus is usually transmitted between infected poultry, but it may infect humans upon direct exposure to infected birds or their droppings. Human infection is considered rare but serious.

Methods of treatment and prevention of H5N1 bird influenza virus

Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral, was distributed to people who had direct contact with the patient and is used to treat seasonal influenza and human H5N1 variants to reduce complications.

Preventive measures are recommended such as:
  • Wash hands well after handling birds.
  • Avoid direct contact with sick or dead poultry.
  • Cook poultry meat well before consumption.
  • Wear masks when dealing with birds in the event of an outbreak of the virus.
