Bitwig Studio 6.0 Ushers in New Era of Workflow and Automation
Berlin-based music software company Bitwig has officially released Bitwig Studio 6, a significant update to its digital audio workstation (DAW). Launched after a beta period in 2025, the update focuses on enhancing the user interface, streamlining workflows, and introducing powerful new features for music production. MusicRadar reports the release delivers an overhaul of automation editing, a new Clip Alias feature, project-wide key signature support, and more.
Revolutionizing Automation Editing
A central feature of Bitwig Studio 6 is a redesigned approach to automation. The update introduces a dedicated Automation Mode, which overlays each track on the timeline with a dedicated automation lane for the most recently adjusted parameter. The Detail Editor Panel now consolidates all automation access for a given track, replacing the previous standalone Automation Editor Panel.
New editing gestures and automation behaviors further refine the process. The Spread feature randomizes values within a specified range for automation points, while the Hold option maintains a constant value until the next point is reached. An improved algorithm smooths curves created with the Pencil tool, making edits more intuitive.
Introducing Automation Clips
Bitwig Studio 6 introduces Automation Clips, which store automation data in a self-contained format. This allows users to apply clip-based features – such as stretching, looping, and independent start times – to automation data. Automation Clips can also be saved to Bitwig’s library for reuse in other projects.
Streamlining Workflows with Clip Aliases
Addressing a common user request, Bitwig Studio 6 introduces Clip Aliases. These specialized duplicates of clips share the same underlying content or Pattern. When one alias is edited, all linked clips across the project are updated simultaneously. Clip Aliases function within both the Clip Launcher and Arranger and are compatible with Audio, Note, and Automation Clips.
Project-Wide Key Signature Support
The update adds project-wide key signature awareness, opening new creative possibilities for composing and arranging within specific scales and keys. Users can now select a key signature alongside tempo and time signature in the Transport section, choosing from 23 scales for any root note, including modes and blues scales. Key signatures can also be automated or modulated using Project Modulators.
Scales are visually displayed when editing notes in the Piano Roll, and existing notes can be quantized to fit the selected scale. Six Note FX devices, including the Key Filter, Arpeggiator, and Randomize, have been updated to integrate with the new scale awareness feature.
Enhanced User Interface and Editing Tools
Bitwig’s visual interface has been refreshed for improved customization and efficiency. Editing tools are now accessible from a streamlined window on the right-hand side, including three new tools: Audition, Spray Can, and Step Input. Audition allows for quick previewing of tracks or clips, Spray Can creates rows of notes or automation points at selected intervals, and Step Input enables MIDI-based note entry without recording.
Availability
Bitwig Studio 6 is available now for Bitwig Studio, Producer, Essentials, and 8-Track users. It is a free upgrade for customers with an active Upgrade Plan as of August 27, 2025. Bitwig Studio 6 is available for purchase via the online store, priced at €399 and includes a year of updates. Sonicstate reports that Dave Linnenbank presented five key new features of Bitwig Studio 6.0.
