BJP to Contest 2027 Punjab Assembly Elections Alone, Amit Shah Declares

Killi Chahlan (Moga), Punjab – In a significant shift in strategy, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections independently, ending speculation of a potential alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Addressing a “Badlaav Rally” in Moga, Shah asserted the BJP’s ambition to form its own government in the state.

Ending the ‘Chhota Bhai’ Era

Shah stated that the era of the BJP playing a secondary role in Punjab politics is over. “Whenever we came before you in the past, we were the junior partner. But from today, the BJP begins its campaign to form its own government in Punjab. You have tried the Congress, the Akalis, and AAP; now give us a chance,” he said, according to the Hindustan Times.

Leveraging 2024 Lok Sabha Performance

Shah highlighted the BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the party secured a 19% vote share in Punjab despite not winning any seats, as a foundation for its 2027 campaign. He pointed to the party’s success in other states, noting how a similar vote share was a stepping stone to forming governments in Assam, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Manipur.

Key Policy Promises

The Home Minister unveiled several key policy promises aimed at addressing critical issues in Punjab:

  • Anti-Conversion Bill: Shah stated that the BJP would introduce an anti-conversion Bill within one month of assuming office, citing the sacrifices of Sikh Gurus against forced conversions.
  • Drug Eradication: He pledged to eliminate the drug trade in Punjab within two years of forming a BJP government, drawing parallels to the Centre’s efforts against Naxalism and the abrogation of Article 370. Republic World reported on this commitment.

Criticism of the AAP Government

Shah launched a strong attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing the Chief Minister of prioritizing the interests of AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal over the needs of Punjab. He alleged that Mann was acting as Kejriwal’s “pilot,” using state-funded aircraft for Kejriwal’s travel, and that Punjab’s treasury was being used as an “ATM” for AAP’s national expansion. UNI India also covered these accusations.

BJP’s Past Alliances and Performance

For over two decades, the BJP had been a junior ally of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab, typically contesting around 23 of the 117 seats. The alliance dissolved in 2020 following disagreements over the now-repealed farm laws. In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP contested 73 seats but won only two, securing a 6.6% vote share. The AAP won a landslide victory, securing 92 seats.

National Democratic Alliance

The BJP is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a multi-party political alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Founded on May 15, 1998, the NDA currently has 39 parties and holds 293 seats in the Lok Sabha and 134 in the Rajya Sabha. According to Wikipedia, Amit Shah is the current Chairperson of the NDA.
