Tesla Accused of Stealing ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Imagery for Robotaxi Launch
Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind the sci-fi film Blade Runner 2049, has filed a lawsuit against Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the electric car manufacturer. The lawsuit alleges that Tesla used sequences from the film in an AI-powered image generator to create promotional materials for the launch of its robotaxi on October 10th.
Musk’s ‘Blade Runner’ Reference
During the unveiling, Musk directly referenced Blade Runner 2049, saying, “You know, I love Blade Runner, but I don’t know if we want that future.” The lawsuit points out the “hardly coincidental” nature of Musk’s choice of film, considering the striking similarities between Tesla’s promotional imagery and iconic scenes from Blade Runner 2049.
Alcon’s Allegations
The lawsuit claims that Tesla’s presentation, which featured an image of a trench-coated figure surveying a desolate cityscape, was deliberately designed to resemble a still from Blade Runner 2049. Alcon argues that this deliberate mimicry was intended to mislead the audience and capitalize on the film’s established brand and imagery.
“The presentation ‘was clearly intended to read visually either as an actual still image from BR2049‘s iconic sequence of K [Ryan Gosling’s character] exploring the ruined Las Vegas or as a minimally stylized copy of one,” the lawsuit states.
Alcon’s Concerns
Alcon Entertainment claims that Tesla’s actions not only violated their intellectual property rights but also damaged their brand reputation. They cite Musk’s “highly politicized, capricious and arbitrary behaviour, which sometimes veers into hate speech,” as a reason for refusing initial requests from Warner Bros. Discovery to use Blade Runner 2049 material.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and demands that Tesla cease distributing the allegedly infringing promotional materials. Alcon is also concerned that Tesla’s actions will negatively impact their potential partnerships for the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 television series.
