Bulgaria Nears Completion of Vertical Gas Corridor, Strengthening Regional Energy Security

Bulgaria is on track to complete its section of the Vertical Gas Corridor by the conclude of 2026, a project designed to enhance the country’s role as a key energy hub in Southeastern Europe and diversify gas supply sources for the region. The corridor aims to reduce reliance on Russian gas and increase energy security for Bulgaria and its neighbors.

Project Progress and Key Connections

As of October 2025, construction of the Bulgarian section was progressing according to plan. Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov announced that approximately 50 kilometers of the 61-kilometer stretch had been laid, with 25 kilometers welded and 7 kilometers already underground. Discussions are underway regarding a contract with Turkey’s Botash to potentially increase gas entry capacity from Turkey to Bulgaria and Western Europe.
