Boyko Borisov Defends Raya Nazaryan Amidst Plenary Hall Conduct Concerns
Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov addressed recent controversy surrounding remarks made by Parliament Speaker Raya Nazaryan, defending her amidst criticism of the increasingly tense atmosphere within the National Assembly. The comments followed reports that Nazaryan was caught on microphone expressing frustration with a dispute regarding a hearing of Interior Minister Emil Dechev.
Borisov Denies Direct Knowledge of Incident
Responding to questions in Burgas on Saturday, Borisov stated he was not present during the exchange and therefore could not comment on the specifics of what was said. “I was not present and I do not know what they said to each other,” he said, according to reporting from Mediapool.
Acknowledging a Hostile Environment
However, Borisov acknowledged that heated exchanges and strong language are commonplace within the plenary hall. He described a climate where “sharp remarks and scandals between deputies are often heard,” noting that the atmosphere is often so fraught that “if you spend more than five to ten minutes inside the gym, then you need a psychotherapist.”
Borisov emphasized the difficulty of maintaining composure in such an environment, stating, “It takes an incredible amount of self-control not to respond in kind.” He further asserted that his party, GERB, has generally maintained a respectful tone. “I’m not saying this as an excuse, but we at GERB managed to keep a good tone – not to offend, not to ironize,” he added.
GERB Election Strategy
During his appearance in Burgas, Borisov also announced that Dimitar Nikolov will again lead the GERB list for the upcoming parliamentary elections, leveraging his popularity to garner votes even as allowing him to retain his mayoral position in the municipality.
