Botafogo Faces FIFA Fine and Potential Transfer Ban Over Artur Debt
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Botafogo Football Club is once again facing sanctions from FIFA due to outstanding debts related to player transfers. The club has been ordered to pay approximately R$35 million (roughly €5.7 million or $6.2 million USD) to Zenit Saint Petersburg for delayed installments in the transfer of striker Artur, confirmed by reports from Globo Esporte and Fogaonet on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Details of the Debt
The debt stems from three overdue installments of €1.9 million each, originally due in March, June, and October of 2025. In addition to the principal amount, Botafogo is also responsible for accrued interest and penalties totaling €114,000. The total amount due to Zenit is €10 million.
Potential Transfer Ban
FIFA has granted Botafogo a 45-day window to settle the debt. Failure to do so could result in another transfer ban, preventing the club from registering new players. This would be the second transfer ban for Botafogo in recent months, following a previous sanction related to the transfer of Thiago Almada from Atlanta United in 2024, as reported by Lance!.
Botafogo’s Response
The club’s management has announced its intention to appeal the FIFA decision, which could potentially extend the deadline for payment.
Artur’s Performance
Artur joined Botafogo in January 2025 for a fee of €10 million, with the intention of filling the void left by Luiz Henrique’s transfer to Zenit. Since then, the striker has made 59 appearances for Botafogo, scoring 10 goals and providing 5 assists.
Previous Financial Issues
This latest ruling highlights ongoing financial challenges for Botafogo regarding player acquisitions. The club is currently facing difficulties in meeting its financial obligations, as noted in reports regarding the Almada transfer.
