Brian Cox Doubts Jeremy Strong’s Immersive Acting Style

In a recent interview, British actor Brian Cox has once again expressed reservations about his “Succession” co-star Jeremy Strong’s intense Method acting approach. While acknowledging Strong’s Emmy-winning performance as Kendall Roy, Cox believes his complete immersion in the character negatively impacts the ensemble cast.

“It Creates Hostility”

Cox told The Guardian, “He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that, so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.” When probed about the challenges of working with an actor “permanently in character,” Cox stated, “Well, it’s not good for the ensemble. It creates hostility. That’s the problem.”

“I’m Not Saying Anything They Don’t Think Anyway”

This isn’t the first time Cox has publicly voiced his opinion on Strong’s acting style. He has previously criticized the actor’s approach, comparing it unfavorably to the more pragmatic approach he favors. Cox also stretched out to other actors, mentioning that he’s criticized Johnny Depp (labeled “overrated”) and Steven Seagal in the past.

Balancing Intensity and Collaboration

Cox admits that Strong is a “delightful” and “extraordinary dad,” but expresses concern about the potential toll of intense method acting. He worries that if an actor cannot separate themselves from their role, “you get worn out.”
