My Wish List for the Next MacBook Air

My Wish List for the Next MacBook Air

While the MacBook Pro is the premier choice for cutting-edge technology, I’ve always been drawn to the MacBook Air for one key reason: portability. The thinness and lightness of the MacBook Air are incredibly appealing, and I’m willing to compromise on features like mini-LED, ProMotion, and additional ports to enjoy that portability.

The MacBook Air isn’t a perfect machine, but there are some simple upgrades I’d love to see Apple implement in the M4 MacBook Air. These improvements would elevate it to an even better device in my opinion.

600 Nit Display

Apple has recently been increasing the standard brightness on many of its newer displays. The M4 MacBook Pro bump from 500 nits to 1000 nits, and even the new M2 iPad Air saw an upgrade from 500 nits to 600 nits on the 13-inch model. So, it’s reasonable to expect Apple could easily increase the M4 MacBook Air’s display brightness from 500 nits to 600 nits.

This upgrade would be a significant usability improvement for MacBook Air users and align with Apple’s trend of enhancing display brightness across its product line.

Improved Thermals

Apple has been making strides in thermal management across devices that rely on passive cooling, particularly the iPhone 16 Pro and the M4 iPad Pro. Both devices feature improved thermal performance through various design changes, such as graphite sheets and copper heatsinks.

Some users have expressed concerns about the thermal performance of the MacBook Air, which has utilized passive cooling since the transition to Apple Silicon. While it performs admirably, there’s always room for improvement. Apple implementing enhanced thermal solutions in the next MacBook Air would definitely be appreciated by many.

In fact, some users have resorted to modifying their MacBook Airs to extend peak performance before thermal throttling. While this is a safe and reversible mod, it does void your warranty if you require service.

Center Stage Camera

While this upgrade is likely a given, since the M4 iMac and M4 MacBook Pro already have it – I’d love to see Center Stage on the next MacBook Air as well. This feature adds a lot of fun functionality, and better webcams are always welcome. Center Stage makes FaceTime more engaging, and features like Desk View are quite useful.
