Brno Discontinues Smart Public Transport Stop Project Due to Vandalism and Technological Advancements
The city of Brno, Czech Republic, has ended its pilot project for smart public transport stops, initially launched eight years ago. The decision to dismantle the information panels stems from repeated vandalism, high repair costs, and the increasing prevalence of smartphone technology among passengers.
Project History and Initial Goals
A pilot project featuring smart stops was established on Moravské náměstí in 2018. These stops were intended to provide passengers with comprehensive information, including real-time traffic updates and other relevant details. According to Hana Tomaštíková, a spokeswoman for the transport company, the smart stops initially appeared promising before the widespread adoption of smartphones.
Reasons for Discontinuation
Vandalism proved to be a significant issue. Weather stations integrated into the panels were repeatedly damaged, and a critical LTE modem – essential for data connectivity – was vandalized, leading to a leak and rendering the system unusable. The cost of repairs and ongoing maintenance was deemed prohibitive.
the rapid advancement of mobile technology diminished the need for the smart stops. As more passengers gained access to smartphones, they increasingly relied on mobile apps and websites for public transport information. A similar panel in Jundrov, operated by the municipal district rather than the transport company, also experienced issues and is currently under review.
Cost and Equipment Details
Each of the two panels on Moravské náměstí cost 178,000 Czech crowns (approximately $8,000 USD as of February 17, 2026) to install, with monthly operating costs of around 5,000 crowns ($225 USD). The equipment will be dismantled, and the bus shelters will be repaired.
Other Discontinued Systems
A ticket machine in Joštová street, which accepted payment card purchases from 2011 to 2023, has also been decommissioned due to malfunctions in the card and coin readers. Demand for paper tickets has significantly decreased as passengers increasingly purchase tickets directly on trams and buses.
Remaining Information Systems
The only remaining information panel operated by the transport company is located at the bus station near the Grand Hotel, displaying bus departures, including international connections. Electronic panels showing current departure times remain in operation at tram stops throughout the city.
Future Outlook
The Brno transport company will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of information systems and adapt to evolving passenger needs and technological advancements. The focus will remain on providing accessible and up-to-date information through mobile channels and existing electronic displays.
