Bulgaria’s Caretaker Government Set to Be Announced as Nation Heads to Eighth Election in Five Years
Sofia, Bulgaria – Bulgaria is poised to have a caretaker government led by Andrey Gyurov, Deputy Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, as the country prepares for its eighth general election in five years. President Iliana Yotova is expected to formally appoint the cabinet today, February 18, 2026, after Gyurov presents its composition at 12:00 PM local time.
Political Instability and the Need for a Caretaker Government
The appointment of a caretaker government comes after the collapse of the previous government, triggered by widespread anti-establishment protests. According to the constitution, elections must be held within two months, with the anticipated date set for April 19th. [1]
Who is Andrey Gyurov?
Andrey Gyurov, a politician from the “We Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria” coalition, brings a background in finance and parliamentary experience to the role. He previously served three terms as a member of parliament for the PP-DB coalition and held the position of chair of the coalition’s parliamentary group. [4] Prior to his parliamentary work, Gyurov was a deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank since 2023. [3] He graduated in economics from Truman State University in Missouri in the late 1990s and later taught finance at Vienna University. [3]
President Yotova’s Role and Avoiding Euroscepticism
The appointment of Gyurov marks the first major decision by President Iliana Yotova, who assumed office after the resignation of Rumen Radev in January. Yotova’s choice of Gyurov is seen as a move to distance herself from potential claims of continuing Radev’s Eurosceptic policies. [3] Yotova stated that the caretaker prime minister faces significant challenges, most importantly ensuring fair elections. [3]
A History of Political Turmoil
Bulgaria has experienced significant political instability in recent years, leading to frequent elections. This upcoming election will be the eighth general election in just five years. [1]
Previous Caretaker Governments
Gyurov is set to lead Bulgaria’s 12th caretaker government. Over the past five years, six caretaker cabinets were appointed by former president Rumen Radev. [4]
