Indonesia Accelerates Food Assistance Programs to Bolster National Stability

The Indonesian government, through the National Food Agency (Bapanas) and the state logistics agency Bulog, has ramped up efforts to distribute essential food supplies across the country. This initiative, aimed at maintaining food security and supporting the purchasing power of citizens, follows direct mandates from President Prabowo Subianto to ensure that aid reaches those in need without delay.

Strategic Distribution Efforts in 2026

Bapanas and Bulog are currently coordinating a large-scale distribution plan for the 2026 fiscal year. To facilitate this, the budget for food assistance has been officially allocated within the Implementation of Budget (DIPA) List of Bapanas. I Gusti Ketut Astawa, Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization at Bapanas, confirmed that the agency has notified Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani to initiate immediate distribution plans across all regions.

A primary focus of this year’s program is the provision of Minyakita, a government-backed cooking oil. Bapanas is actively working with Bulog to secure sufficient stocks of the product sourced through the Domestic Margin Obligation (DMO). The total requirement for the 2026 cooking oil assistance program is 132,980,436 liters and officials emphasize that once these stocks are secured, distribution will proceed immediately to ensure consistent supply.

Emergency Response to Natural Disasters

Beyond the scheduled national assistance programs, Bulog maintains a responsive posture regarding emergency food distribution. In recent months, the agency has prioritized aid for communities impacted by natural disasters, specifically flooding in Sumatra.

Newark keeps up free food distribution

According to Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, the agency’s staff has been instructed to work closely with local partners to ensure food security remains stable in affected provinces, including Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra. During recent emergency operations, the agency delivered significant quantities of essential goods to residents, including:

  • 1,300 kg of rice
  • 60 kg of sugar
  • 178 liters of cooking oil
  • 10 boxes of instant noodles
  • 600 meal boxes

records indicate that between October and November 2025, Bulog distributed over 34 million kilograms of rice and nearly 7 million liters of cooking oil across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. By November 30, 2025, the agency had also utilized regional government food reserves (CPPD) to provide additional support, totaling more than 287 tonnes of rice to these provinces.

Key Takeaways

  • Government Mandate: The acceleration of food aid is a direct directive from President Prabowo Subianto to stabilize the food supply and protect citizen purchasing power.
  • Operational Readiness: Bapanas has confirmed that budget allocations for 2026 food assistance are available, allowing Bulog to finalize logistics for nationwide distribution.
  • Focus on Essentials: The program centers on the reliable supply of rice and Minyakita cooking oil, with specific volume targets set for the year.
  • Emergency Flexibility: Bulog continues to manage regional food reserves to provide rapid relief during natural disasters, ensuring that emergency food stocks are accessible when needed.

As the government moves forward with these programs, the focus remains on logistical efficiency and the timely delivery of goods to stabilize markets and support local populations. Officials have reiterated that while the scale of distribution is significant, the commitment to preventing delays remains a top administrative priority.
