Channel 4 has officially commissioned Army of Shadows, a high-stakes thriller series written by BAFTA-winner Ronan Bennett. The project, which has begun filming in locations including Manchester, Liverpool, London, and Paris, features a lead cast including America Ferrera, Paddy Considine, Kit Harington, and Alex Hassell. The drama explores the mechanics of resistance within an occupied Great Britain.
Production and Creative Origins
The series draws its narrative framework from Joseph Kessel’s 1943 novel L’Armée des ombres and the subsequent 1969 film adaptation directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. Both works are recognized for their unflinching portrayal of the French Resistance during World War II. According to Channel 4, the new television adaptation has been developed with the full support of the Melville family and the Kessel estate, which is currently managed by the Irish Red Cross.

Lisa Gunning is attached to direct. The series is a co-production between StudioCanal and Two Cities Television.
Plot and Setting
Army of Shadows shifts the historical premise of the French Resistance to a speculative, occupied Great Britain. The narrative follows a former soldier, referred to as Berry, who organizes an underground network. The plot centers on a group of ordinary citizens—including a student, a radiographer, and a journalist—who choose to resist an occupying state with vast surveillance and enforcement capabilities.
America Ferrera stars as Jessie, an American operative described as a formidable professional working against the resistance. The series is framed as a tense exploration of the personal costs of dissent and the moral weight of choosing resistance under an authoritarian regime.
Global Distribution
Canal+ has secured the rights to broadcast the series across its global footprint, covering more than 50 countries throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. StudioCanal is managing the worldwide distribution and international sales.
Gwawr Lloyd, the interim head of drama at Channel 4, stated that the series is designed to be "gripping, provocative and action-packed," while addressing significant questions regarding democracy and freedom. The production aims to provide a high-stakes narrative that feels relevant to contemporary political discourse.
