Portugal is battling a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 44C (111F) in some areas. Hospitals are reporting a surge in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, and the country is on high alert for wildfires.
The heatwave, which began last week, is impacting much of southern Europe. Portugal is particularly vulnerable due to its location and dry climate. Authorities have issued red warnings – the highest level – for several districts.
