Spike in Dog Attacks on Sheep Worry Farmers in Co Kerry
Kerry sheep farmers are facing a worrying rise in dog attacks, with several animals killed or seriously injured in recent weeks.
Numerous Attacks Report
Reports of dog attacks on sheep surged in mid-December with Knocknagoshel witnessing five sheep killed by dogs, several others severely injured, and some missing. On St Stephen’s Day, a dog killed a sheep in Templenoe and chased others. Concerns are mounting across the county.
Map Hidden Due to Data Protection
Kerry County Council has created a color-coded map highlighting dog attack incidents over the past year. However, this valuable tool cannot be publicly accessible due to data privacy concerns (GDPR).
Calls for Transparency and Action
Kerry County Councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald, who requested the map’s creation, is disappointed by the restriction. “It is nonsense that this map, which Kerry County Council has, cannot be published under GDPR requirements,” he stated. “It would also raise awareness to the public about how prevalent the problem is and prick the conscience of dog owners in the surrounding areas as to the proper and safe housing of their dogs, especially at night time.” He insists the map could be crucial in assisting gardaí investigations and informing the public about the severity of the issue.
Councillor Fitzgerald emphasized the devastating impact of these attacks, noting, “The attacks cause great damage to livelihood, innocent animals endure great pain and suffering plus there is the huge upset, financial and emotional, to sheep farmers in rural Ireland.”
Demand for Enhanced Dog Control Measures
Councillor Fitzgerald also advocates for stricter enforcement when it comes to dog tagging. He believes utilizing the Area Monitoring Satellite system by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine could significantly reduce dog attacks. This satellite system monitors farm activity and has the potential to aid in identifying culprits.
Council Statement and Reward Offered
Kerry County Council issued a statement confirming the map’s existence, stating that it contains personal information and is intended for authorized officers only.
Farmer John Egan is offering a reward for information following a dog attack near Coss Strand in Templenoe on St Stephen’s Day that resulted in one sheep death and four injured. This popular dog walking area, where dogs are often off-lead, is suspected to be the scene of the incident.
Protecting Livestock and Responsible Dog Ownership
The recent rise in dog attacks highlights the urgent need to address this issue. It is vital to promote responsible dog ownership, ensure proper containment, and reinforce the importance of keeping dogs under control in areas where livestock graze.
