Cambodia Opens Techo International Airport,Boosting Aviation Capacity

KANDAL, Cambodia, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially inaugurated the Techo International Airport (TIA) on Monday,marking a critically important milestone in the country’s aviation expansion.

During the inauguration ceremony, Hun Manet stated the $2.3 billion airport replaces the former Phnom Penh International Airport, which has now closed.

“The TIA is cambodia’s biggest airport at the present,” he said. “I’m confident that the TIA will become a catalyst for Cambodia’s economic and tourism growth, attracting more investors and tourists.”

Hun Manet explained the 4F-level international airport will improve air travel and cargo transport, strengthening Cambodia’s connections to the region and the world.

He added the airport will serve as a primary passenger and logistics hub within the kingdom.

The TIA features a dual 4 km runway, capable of handling long-haul flights and all aircraft types, according to the prime minister.

mao Havannall, minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, described the TIA as a historic milestone for Cambodia’s civil aviation sector.

“It will become a key bridge connecting Cambodia to a broader world and a driving force for Cambodia’s economic and tourism growth as well as logistics development,” he said.

Construction began in 2020,with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation as the contractor.

The TIA is invested in by Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd and spans 2,600 hectares in southern Kandal and Takeo provinces, over 20 km from Phnom Penh.
