Car Bomb Explosion Outside Police Station in Dunmurry Leads to Evacuations
Homes were evacuated in the Kingsway area of Dunmurry, on the outskirts of Belfast, after a car bomb exploded outside a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) station late on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The device, placed in a vehicle, detonated with the intent to kill officers and cause maximum harm, according to Brendan Mullan, chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
Emergency services responded swiftly, and while the blast caused significant damage to the vehicle and surrounding area, no casualties were reported. Residents were advised to avoid the vicinity as cordons remained in place and forensic examinations continued.
Official Statements Condemn the Attack
Brendan Mullan stated that those responsible had a “callous disregard for people living close to the station” and emphasized that the act was intended to cause maximum harm in a residential area. First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the attack, saying the perpetrators “have no vision, no support, and have nothing to offer our society,” and reaffirmed that communities deserve peace.

SDLP councillor Paul Doherty and DUP leader Gavin Robinson likewise voiced concern, with Robinson describing the incident as “deeply concerning” and urging that those responsible be identified and brought before the courts. Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood noted it was the second such incident at a police station in recent weeks, referencing a prior attack in Lurgan.
Investigation Underway
Police confirmed that no officers were injured in the blast. A security alert remained active, with updates expected as the investigation progressed. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while examinations of the scene continued.
