Cardinals Bolster Linebacker Corps with Baron Browning Trade

The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Arizona Cardinals have already made a key move to strengthen their defense. On Monday, the team announced a trade for outside linebacker Baron Browning from the Denver Broncos. The deal, pending a physical, saw the Cardinals part with a sixth-round draft pick for the former third-round selection out of Ohio State.

Experienced Pass Rusher Joins the Cardinals

Browning, who has accumulated 9.5 career sacks, started for the Broncos this season before landing on Injured Reserve due to a left foot injury sustained in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His arrival provides an immediate boost to a Cardinals defense seeking consistent pass rush.

Gannon Confident in Browning’s Abilities

“I don’t know him personally, but I did a lot of work on him when he came out (for the draft),” Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said. “I really liked the character and the seriousness of the guy. He’s a well-rounded player.”

Gannon added that the Broncos utilized Browning at inside linebacker initially before shifting him to the outside with the arrival of Sean Payton as head coach last season. Browning’s versatility allows him to contribute on all three downs.

Making Room for Browning

To accommodate Browning on the roster, the Cardinals released cornerback Darren Hall on Monday. This move cleared the necessary space to welcome the new acquisition.

Johnson Excited to Reunite with Browning

Talon Johnson Jr., a teammate of Browning’s during their time together at Ohio State in 2020, expressed enthusiasm about his former college teammate joining the Cardinals.

“I’ve seen his tape the past two years, just to keep up with the Buckeyes around the league,” Johnson said. “He’s explosive off the ball and I think that’s why he’s able to threaten the edge often. So I think he adds that to the locker room.”

Ossenfort Prioritizes Team Needs

Cardinals General Manager Monti Ossenfort emphasized the team’s data-driven approach to roster construction during a recent interview with Arizona Sports.

“I have no expectation other than we’re going to investigate every single opportunity that comes across,” Ossenfort said. “If there’s an opportunity that we want to pursue, we’re going to go investigate that as well.

“If something comes together that we feel can help this team, we’re going to be excited to do it. But we also don’t want to make a move just to make a move if it’s not the right move for this team.”

Ready for the Final Stretch

As the trade deadline draws closer, the Cardinals look poised for a strong finish to the season with the addition of Browning to their defensive lineup.

Stay tuned for updates on the Cardinals and the rest of the NFL throughout the trade deadline frenzy.
