Cathal O’Sullivan Joins Preston North End After Successful Stint at Cork City

Cork City playmaker Cathal O’Sullivan has completed a move to English Championship side Preston North End. The 19-year-old Irish underage international joins Preston after his contract with Cork City expired in November 2025.

Early Career and Breakthrough at Cork City

O’Sullivan initially joined Cork City as a 12-year-old, beginning his career with Leeside United before moving to Turner’s Cross in January 2020. He made his professional debut in 2023 and quickly established himself as a key player for the club, making over 50 appearances and scoring seven goals.

2024 Season and Injury Setback

The young midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough 2024 campaign, earning a place in the PFAI First Division Team of the Year. He scored seven goals in 28 league appearances, showcasing his exceptional movement and skill [1]. Although, O’Sullivan suffered a cruciate knee injury last summer, which sidelined him for a period [2].

Move to Preston and FIFA Training Compensation

Despite interest from other clubs, including Celtic and Brentford, O’Sullivan opted to join Preston North End, a club with a strong historical connection to Cork City, having previously featured players like Alan Browne and Seani Maguire [3]. As he was out of contract, Cork City did not receive a transfer fee but reached an agreement with Preston North End in line with FIFA Training Compensation regulations, which will see them benefit financially if O’Sullivan’s career progresses successfully in England [3].

Preston North End’s Perspective

Preston North End confirmed the signing of the 19-year-old, who has made 54 appearances for Cork City’s first team [4]. He will initially link up with the Under-21s, now overseen by Ryan Taylor. Sean Maguire, formerly of Cork City, previously praised O’Sullivan’s talent, stating he “can be whatever he wants” and is “one of the best young fellas” he’s played with [4].

Cork City announced the move on social media, wishing O’Sullivan every success in the future.
