Talia Oatway Shares Update on Son Oakley’s Health Journey Following Apert Syndrome Diagnosis
Talia Oatway, ex-partner of reality television personality Aaron Chalmers, has provided a poignant update on the health of their three-year-ancient son, Oakley. Oakley has undergone 20 surgeries since birth due to Apert syndrome, a rare genetic condition affecting the skull, hands, and feet.
Understanding Apert Syndrome
Apert syndrome is characterized by the premature fusion of certain skull bones, a condition known as craniosynostosis. This can impact the shape of the head and face, and may also cause problems with breathing and vision. The condition also affects the hands and feet according to the NHS.
Oakley’s Medical Journey
Oatway shared her experiences on social media, describing the emotional toll of frequent hospital visits and the constant fear for her son’s well-being. She emphasized the importance of trusting a mother’s instinct when advocating for a child with complex medical needs. She noted the challenges of recognizing subtle changes in Oakley’s condition, as he is unable to fully communicate his discomfort.
In addition to Apert syndrome, Oakley was also diagnosed with hydrocephalus in November 2025, a condition involving a build-up of fluid in the brain. A shunt was surgically implanted to drain the excess fluid as reported on TikTok. Untreated hydrocephalus can be life-threatening.
Challenges and Support
Oatway has publicly expressed frustration with Aaron Chalmers’ perceived lack of involvement in Oakley’s medical care, stating he does not attend appointments or actively participate in his son’s health journey The Sun reports. She has emphasized the emotional and logistical burden of solo parenting although navigating Oakley’s complex medical needs.
Oatway also shared that Oakley may require a wheelchair in the future due to the development of prominent bones in his feet, a common issue for children with Apert syndrome. Despite these challenges, she celebrates every milestone and remains dedicated to providing Oakley with the best possible care.
Looking Ahead
Talia Oatway continues to document Oakley’s journey on social media, aiming to raise awareness about Apert syndrome and hydrocephalus, and to connect with other families facing similar challenges. She hopes to provide a realistic portrayal of life with a child with complex medical needs and to advocate for greater support for medical families.
