Whooping Cough Cases Surge in the United States: It’s Time to Talk Vaccinations

If you’ve noticed more people around you coughing uncontrollably, almost violently, they could be suffering from whooping cough, also known as Pertussis. According to a recent CDC report issued December 14, 2023, there’s been an alarming surge of cases, hitting 32,085 this year. This six-fold increase compared to this time last year marks the highest number of whooping cough cases reported since 2014. Learn More.

One leading cause of this resurgence? Decreased vaccination rates.

Understanding Whooping Cough and Its Impact

Whooping cough is caused by a bacterium called *Bordetella pertussis*. The infection leads to severe coughing spells that can send chills down anyone’s spine. These intense fits, accompanied by a “whooping” sound as you gasp for breath, can pose serious risks for infants, children, and people with weakened immune systems. Complications can include pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and even death.

Back in the 1940s, scientists developed an effective vaccine called DTaP, significantly reducing whooping cough cases in the United States. While 32,085 cases might seem high, remember it’s only a fraction compared to the historical peak of 100,000 to 300,000 cases recorded annually before vaccination.

A Decline in Vaccinations: What’s Behind the Spike?

Despite the incredible success of DTaP, vaccination rates amongst children have waned in recent years, influenced by the misinformation spread by anti-vaccine groups. While kindergarten vaccination rates stand at around 92% for the 2023-2024 school year, falling short of the 95% “herd immunity” threshold recommended by health officials puts countless children unnecessarily at risk.

As vaccine effectiveness naturally diminishes over time, adults may also need a booster dose known as Tdap. Sadly, only 43% of adults over 18 years old have received this booster shot in the last decade.

It’s crucial that we prioritize protecting ourselves and each other from vaccine-preventable diseases like whooping cough. Talk to your doctor about vaccines and ensure your family is adequately protected. Our health and wellbeing depend on it.
