OpenAI Doubles Down on India with New Offices, Partnerships and Surging User Growth
New Delhi, India – February 20, 2026 – OpenAI is significantly expanding its presence in India, fueled by a rapidly growing user base and strategic partnerships with leading Indian companies. The company announced new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, alongside a major collaboration with Tata Group, signaling a long-term commitment to the Indian market.
India: OpenAI’s Second Largest Market
India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market globally, boasting over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users as reported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This growth is particularly notable among young adults, with individuals aged 18-24 accounting for nearly 50% of messages sent to ChatGPT in the country, and those under 30 comprising 80% of the user base.
Focus on Professional Use and Coding Assistance
Indian users are leveraging ChatGPT primarily for function-related tasks, with 35% of all messages pertaining to professional applications, slightly higher than the 30% global average. The company’s coding assistant, Codex, is experiencing particularly strong traction in India, with usage three times higher than the global median and a fourfold increase in weekly usage since the release of the Mac app. Indian users are also submitting three times as many coding-related questions compared to the average user.
Strategic Partnerships and Expansion
OpenAI’s partnership with Tata Group will secure 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity and facilitate the distribution of ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Additional agreements have been established with fintech company Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and MakeMyTrip, and food and grocery delivery service Eternal. OpenAI is collaborating with educational institutions to provide its tools to over 100,000 students over the next six years.
OpenAI for India Initiative
The expansion comes as OpenAI launches “OpenAI for India,” a nationwide initiative unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi according to OpenAI. This initiative aims to foster AI innovation and adoption across the country through collaborations with leading Indian partners.
Addressing the AI Debate with Data
“AI adoption is moving faster than our ability to measure it – and that’s a challenge for anyone trying to make smart decisions. Signals is our way of putting real-world evidence on the table, so India’s AI debate can be grounded in facts, not hype,” stated OpenAI’s chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji.
ChatGPT Go and Accessibility
OpenAI has focused on making its AI tools accessible to the Indian market, offering a sub-$5 subscription tier and promotional campaigns to encourage adoption. ChatGPT Go, initially introduced in India in August 2025 as a low-cost subscription, is now available worldwide as announced by OpenAI.
