Severe Storms Possible for Chicago Area Thursday, Colder Temperatures to Follow
Chicago residents enjoyed unusually warm temperatures earlier this week, but a shift in the weather pattern is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, with the potential for severe weather. A significant drop in temperatures is forecast for the end of the week and into the weekend.
Severe Weather Threat Thursday
A low-pressure system moving through the region is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Chicago area on Thursday afternoon. According to the Storm Prediction Center, most of the area is at a “marginal” risk of severe weather, primarily south of Interstate 88 [NBC Chicago], [Fox 32 Chicago]. The highest risk is south of Interstate 80, particularly in areas of southern Newton and Jasper Counties, which are under a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) [Fox 32 Chicago].
The primary threats associated with any strong thunderstorms that develop include gusty winds, potentially exceeding 60 miles per hour, and the possibility of hail. There is also a non-zero risk of tornadoes, especially south of Interstate 80 [NBC Chicago].
Forecast models suggest the most significant thunderstorm activity will likely occur south of the Chicago area, impacting central and southern Illinois and Indiana [NBC Chicago]. The storms are expected to arrive in the early afternoon, with temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s.

Highs on Friday are forecast to be near 42°F, with a chance of rain and snow before 9 am, transitioning to a chance of snow between 9 am and noon [National Weather Service].
