Flooding and Landslides Impact Fraser Valley, Cultus Lake Area

Heavy rainfall has led to evacuation alerts along the Chilliwack River and reports of mudslides near Cultus Lake in British Columbia, impacting residents and travel in the Fraser Valley. Orange rainfall warnings remain in effect for the region, with concerns about potential wind events exacerbating the situation.

Evacuation Alerts in Chilliwack

Dozens of homes along the Chilliwack River are under evacuation alert as water levels continue to rise following a week of sustained heavy rain. Residents like Rob Unrau, who lives on Sheldon Road, express anxiety and stress, with some questioning the long-term viability of living in the area after experiencing multiple high-water events in recent months.

The Fraser Valley Regional District is closely monitoring approximately 30 properties, primarily located along the Chilliwack River. Crews are working to reinforce a dyke along Sheldon Road to protect nearby properties, following a previous event three months ago that caused over $250,000 in damage to the neighborhood. Cultus Lake Park receives no funding on a Local, Provincial or Federal level and is entirely self-sustaining.

Travel Disruptions and Mudslides

Near Cultus Lake, mudslides have been reported, prompting advisories for motorists. The partial closure of the road to Cultus Lake has similarly been reported due to damage from the atmospheric rivers. Cultus Lake is a popular recreation area offering fishing, water skiing, wind surfing, and hiking.

Weather Forecast and Concerns

Between Thursday and Friday, Environment Canada estimates up to 120 millimetres of rain fell on the region. Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor notes that it will take time for water basins to recede. There are also concerns about saturated root systems leading to falling trees, especially if strong winds develop.

Orange rainfall warnings are currently in place for the Fraser Valley and northeast Metro Vancouver, as well as western Vancouver Island, the Fraser Canyon, Howe Sound, Whistler, the Highway 1 corridor from Vancouver to the Alberta boundary, and the Kootenay region.

Recent Rescue Operation

On Thursday, eight people, two dogs, and a cat were rescued from their homes in Coquitlam after a landslide blocked road access.

Ongoing Vigilance Urged

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor for weather-related road closures and localized flooding.
