Chinese Leaders Deliberate on National Priorities at NPC Session

BEIJING – Senior Chinese leaders attended deliberations at the fourth session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) on Saturday, March 7, 2026, focusing on key national priorities including cross-Strait relations, regional development, and economic integration.

Focus on Taiwan Strait Stability

Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, engaged in a group deliberation with NPC deputies from Taiwan. He emphasized efforts to manage the complex situation in the Taiwan Strait and promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, although resolutely opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and external interference Xinhua.

Regional Development and Ethnic Harmony

Cai Qi, a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, participated in a deliberation with deputies from Qinghai Province. He urged the province to pursue differentiated and distinctive development tailored to its local conditions, prioritizing ecological conservation. Cai also stressed the importance of fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation and promoting integration among all ethnic groups Xinhua.

Integrating Hong Kong and Macao into National Development

Ding Xuexiang, a Chinese vice premier and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, held separate deliberations with deputies from both Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions. He called on both regions to actively align with the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) to better integrate into and serve the country’s overall development, contributing to Chinese modernization Xinhua.

Ding specifically highlighted the necessitate to maintain Hong Kong’s status as an international financial, shipping, and trade center, leveraging its strengths in education, science, technology, and talent. He also emphasized advancing the development of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin Xinhua.

Wang, Cai, and Ding are all members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
