Ferrari Unveils Innovative Rotating Wing for Chinese Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari are set to debut a groundbreaking rotating rear wing design at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, a concept first seen during pre-season testing. The team is pushing for upgrades early in the season, with Hamilton expressing his pride in their proactive approach.
The ‘Macarena’ Wing: A New Approach to Aerodynamics
Dubbed the ‘macarena’ due to its unique motion, the rear wing rotates 180 degrees into an upside-down position when the car is in straight-line mode. This differs from conventional designs where the top element of the rear wing flattens to reduce drag. The design was initially tested in Bahrain last month and will be utilized at the Shanghai International Circuit, known for its 1.1km straight where straight-line speed is crucial.
Hamilton on the New Technology
“We did a full day or so on the wing, so I think we got all the running needed for it,” Hamilton stated. He also highlighted his appreciation for the team’s dedication, noting that the development and implementation of the wing were expedited. “I’m so grateful for the team because it was actually supposed to be later down the line and they worked really hard to develop it and receive it brought here. So that for me is just great to observe that the team are fighting, the team are pushing and chasing and really working overtime back at the factory to be able to bring upgrades because that’s the name of the game.”
Sprint Weekend Considerations
The Chinese Grand Prix is a Sprint weekend, meaning teams have only one practice session to set up their cars. This presents a challenge, as demonstrated last year when Ferrari struggled with setup adjustments after Hamilton’s Sprint victory. The unpredictable nature of Sprint weekends, coupled with a forecast of rain for the Grand Prix, adds further complexity to the race.
Looking Ahead
The introduction of this innovative wing design underscores Ferrari’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of Formula 1 technology. Whether the ‘macarena’ wing will translate into a competitive advantage remains to be seen, but it signifies a bold step forward for the team as they aim to challenge for the championship.
